Introduced to the artists of this period through Helen Lundeberg (1908-1999) - whose monumental Interior with Painting will be featured in this exhibit - Tobey C. Moss Gallery realized the incredible depth of talent were working in southern California long before the Ferus Gallery group began to gain national recognition. It became our singular mission to promote these important Los Angeles artists, active since the 1930s.
The Tobey C. Moss Gallery began in 1978 as a dealer of fine prints and works on paper. Within two years after opening, the gallery broadened its focus. While continuing to offer American and International 16th through 20th centuries works on paper, we brought particular attention to the art and artists of California.
We have enjoyed thirty years of exhibiting the works of Lundeberg as well as that of Clinton Adams, Ruth Asawa, Karl Benjamin, Nicholas P. Brigante, Jean Charlot, William Dole, Rupert J. Deese, Werner Drewes, Leonard Edmondson, Jules Engel, Sorel Etrog, Claire Falkenstein, Lorser Feitelson, Oskar Fischinger, Fred Hammersley, George Herms, Bruce Houston, John Langley Howard, Jim Hueter, Luchita Hurtado, Ynez Johnston, Peter Krasnow, Basil Langton, David P. Levine, Stanton Macdonald Wright, Sam Maloof, Harrison McIntosh, John McLaughlin, Lee Mullican, Nathan Oliveira, Channing Peake, Jay Rivkin, Betye Saar, Palmer Schoppe, Peter Shire, Joyce Treiman, Gordon Wagner, Howard Warshaw, Emerson Woelffer and many others. We enjoyed personal friendships with most of them.
We invite You and You and You to see more and learn more about these artists and to ‘live’ with them, as we have for the course of more than thirty years. Your interest in their art will not diminish over time, but - rather - will grow in vitality. There will always be some ‘new’ detail to see every day.
A well illustrated catalogue accompanies this exhibition.
