Manuel Alvarez-Bravo was born in Mexico City into a family of artists, including his grandfather, who was a photographer. He studied at the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes, and received his first camera in 1923. Much of his work is surreal in character, while he associated with many revolutionary artists and writers, he did not let politics overwhelm the personal aspects of his work. He died in 2002 at the age of 100.
