Leonora Carrington was born in England in 1917. Early in her career she moved to Paris and was associated with the European Surrealists, to whom she was introduced by German Surrealist painter Max Ernst, and in 1947, she was the one of the few female artists included in an exhibition of surrealism mounted at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York. After the Germans seized France during World War II, Carrington escaped to Spain where she took refuge in the Mexican Embassy there. She left Europe in 1941 and, after one year living in New York City, settled in Mexico in 1942, where she has remained ever since, and the rich legends and mythology of that country became her inspiration. She also formed a close friendship with Remedios Varo, another European ex patriot (she was born in Spain) who also created Surrealist paintings. Carrington has been embraced by her adopted country, becoming one of its most revered artists.
