José Luis Cuevas was born in Mexico City in 1934. Cuevas began exhibiting his work in the 1950s. At this time, he became associated with a group of artists called the “Rupture-Generation”, who were opposed to the socialist artists favored by the government, and Cuevas railed against the pro-Mexico artwork of Rivera and Siqueiros. His most characteristic works portray drawings of misshapen creatures and misery in the contemporary world. The José Luis Cuevas Museum in México City honors his contribution to art and displays contemporary art collection of the artist.
