    ED HAMILTON'S PRINTER'S PROOFS

    Lithographs of 1969 - 1989

    Edward Ruscha "V" Lithograph  1989  36 x 27 inches (914 x 686 mm)

    July 15, 2000 to August 30, 2000
    Reception: Saturday, July 15th - 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m

The artists for whom Ed Hamilton has printed inspire awe: Ed Ruscha, George Herms,

Bruce Nauman, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Billy AI Bengston, Joe Goode, William

Crutchfield, June Wayne, Charles White, Emerson Woelffer ....among others. Since

Ed Hamilton's 1969 beginnings at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, through twenty

years of work at Cirrus Editions, Gemini G.E.L. and June Wayne Studios, he has

collaborated with the icons of contemporary art. Hamilton, Master Printer, is the artists'

choice to proof and pull their editions. The lithographs in this exhibition are the editioned

'printer's proofs' selected from his personal collection.

The printer's role is not apparent as Hamilton works in harmony with artists of vastly

varying concepts to achieve their personal goals, but the artisrs know.  Ed Hamilton

helps the artists to capture their desired compositions in subtle surfaces and in the line

drawn on or scratched from the stone and plate. In symbiotic .relationship, the artist and

the printer have created art that neither one could achieve independently.

Though his'major' in the MFA program at University of Arizona was in Intaglio

Printmaking, the medium of printing on stone - lithography - superseded his early

interest and led to a Fellowship under Master Printer Serge Lozingot at Tamarind. He

cites the experience achieved working there and with Jean Milant at Cirrus, Lozingot

(again) at Gemini and, most particularly, the fourteen years with June Wayne in her

Studio as the base in forming his Hamilton Press with Ed Ruscha in 1990.
