JAY RIVKIN
25 Years of Collage and Drawing

JAY RIVKIN’s life has been one filled with creativity.  From her early days as a dress designer to her present work in collage, assemblage and drawing, Rivkin’s ingenuity has never failed to amaze.

Moving to Los Angeles in the 1940s, Rivkin continued the career she began in New York, designing clothes, booklets, catalogues, etc.  She also took night classes, with Glen Lukens, the famed ceramicist.  Subsequently, Rivkin became the first employee of the UPA Studios doing backgrounds.  Her first job was a film to help re-elect FDR.

After World War II, she and her husband and friend formed Jay Associates, designing furniture, incorporating under-glaze painted tiles and wood.  Some pieces were used in Case Study Houses of Southern California.

In the late 1940s and 1950s, Rivkin created tile murals for architects in Los Angeles, Nevada, Hawaii and New York.  Some notable commissions include The Flamingo Hotel and the Desert Inn Convention Center in Las Vegas.

Since the 1970s, she designed and illustrated many childrens books and cookbooks.

Our show focuses upon works created in the past 25 years.  We include the large cylindrical construction, Inter-Space, and the modernist-design 3-panel wood screen, Spacer.  We also include exquisite line drawings (see Umbrella and Open Sky), architectural etchings (Circle and Square Variations) and intricately painted wood sculptures (Fish).  Collages from The Recycled Series, The Money Series and California Car Culture Series are also featured.
