At the beginning of the twenty-four-plus years of my Gallery, I was influenced by my mentor, Jake Zeitlin, the result of spending four years in the Big Red Barn on La Cienega. My focus was upon five centuries of prints and drawings. I shifted into a broader view when I recognized a vacuum regarding the art historical references to modernist artists of California. I discovered the discrepancy as I researched specifically for data on Lorser Feitelson and Helen Lundeberg; somehow, Janson, Gombrich and others hardly, if ever, crossed the Hudson River! Dorothy Miller at MOMA, NY and Carl Zigrosser were among the exceptions.
I sought out the art and artists who had evolved from European inspired landscape to a new view through simplification of form, or hardedge geometric abstraction, of post-surreal, meditative or 'mood' entities. I called it 'California Modernism' as an all-encompassing term.
Through my successful search I've had the privilege of knowing many of these wonderful artists: Clinton Adams, Nick Brigante, Dorr Bothwell, Jean Charlot, Rupert Deese, Werner Drewes, Leonard Edmondson, Jules Engel, Claire Falkenstein, Lorser Feitelson, John Langley Howard, James Hueter, Ynez Johnston, Peter Krasnow, David P. Levine, Helen Lundeberg, Harrison McIntosh, Sam Maloof, Palmer Schoppe, Joyce Treiman, Emerson Woelffer, and the widows : Bunny Bernhardt, Joella Bayer, Zohmah Charlot, Maria Drewes, Elfriede Fischinger, Katherine Dole, Rose Krasnow, Constance Lebrun, Cherie Peake and Virginia Wagner. I have been proud to exhibit their works with full respect and admiration. I admit that much of the romance of the period for me lay in the pleasure I derived from these friendships and acquaintances, as well as in the art created. Through these fascinating people I learned nuances, anecdotes and facts of art historical significance about the art scenes and personalities active in Southern California between the 1920s and 1960s. The work of many of these artists are illustrated in this catalogue. Others will be included in the next catalogue being planned: Works on Paper - to include prints, drawings, watercolors, photogravures, collages, paintings - all on paper.
Over the years, I also have enjoyed working, nationally and internationally, with collectors, directors, curators and writers. This wonderfully interesting and dedicated group of men and women have given me great personal inspiration, guidance and encouragement. I have great pleasure in visiting distant lands and cities to serendipitously discover welcoming colleagues.
In this new catalogue we are offering fine works by thirty-three artists. They cover a spectrum of techniques and imageries from post-surrealism to realism, from figuration to abstraction. Most come directly from the artist or the artist's estate; all have good provenance. This is a limited selection, to create a 'profile' of the gallery; additional works by these and other artists are also available.
