Ruth Asawa
and
Artes Latinos
July 7 through September 8, 2009
The Tobey C. Moss Gallery presents two parallel exhibitions - Ruth Asawa: Drawings and Prints and Artes Latinos.
Ruth Asawa: Drawings and Prints reveals Asawa’s powers in two dimensions. We will be showing lithographs created at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in 1965. While at Tamarind, Asawa was allowed to explore and experiment, creating unique lithographs that evoke her sculptures. Her Desert Flower series of lithographs mirror the intricate, lacy forms of her tied-wire sculptures. Her dense, painterly Plane Tree lithographs relate to her work with cast bronze. We will also exhibit more recent works, including delicate renderings of plants and flowers.
Artes Latinos will feature paintings, sculpture and prints from artists of Mexico and the Americas. Included will be works by Chicano artists such as Carlos Almaraz, Gronk, and Frank Romero. Highlights of the exhibition include bronze sculptures by Francisco Zuñiga, a surreal painting by Roberto Montenegro, drawings by Raul Anguiano, an impression of Elizabeth Catlett’s monumental The Sharecropper, lithographs by Leonora Carrington, Gego, Rufino Tamayo and Francisco Toledo. Also shown will be prints created at the Taller de Grafica Popular in Mexico City by artists such as Angel Bracho, Francisco Dosamantes, Pablo O’Higgins and others.
