The Tobey C. Moss Gallery presents works by LEONARD EDMONDSON (1916 - 2002) and EMERSON WOELFFER (1914 - 2003), leaders in the art history of Los Angeles creativity.

Leonard Edmondson is a master of the etching plate, his sophisticated use of viscosity intaglio techniques results in prints that have texture and layered depth. Through his work and in his respected text book on “Etching”, published in 1972, he guided the developing artists in the application of these techniques. Whether with a full range of bold colors or simply in shades of black and white, Edmondson’s unique ‘voice’ imbues his etchings with an expressive kineticism. We will be exhibiting intaglios, lithographs, screenprints, watercolors, drawings and collages created between the late 1940s and 1960.

In his early lithography, created at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, Emerson Woelffer built on the vocabulary of surrealism and sensuous calligraphy towards an abstraction that sometimes related to figuration. In the early 1960s, he accepted an invitation from founder/director June Wayne to work at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop. At the Tamarind, he made the first of many editions; his ‘romance’ with lithograph stone never waned over the next five decades. In addition to these impressions, we will be exhibiting Woelffer’s collages and paintings on paper.
